Why am I doing this?

Many people have told me that I was crazy to think I could do this, and sometimes I wonder if I am crazy myself. I am embarking on an adventure of a lifetime. My lifetime.

I'm 62 years old. And for the last 10 years something, this adventure, has been pulling at my heart. I wasn't sure when I would do it, and every year I kept thinking that perhaps next year would be the year. And another year would come. And another year would go. THIS, my friends, is the year.

In April, I will embark on this 6200 mile journey. On a bicycle. Alone. I will set out from Key West Florida, which is the most southern point in the Continental United States, and I will dip my front tire into the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay Alaska. This adventure will cover 11 states, two countries, and will end 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle. My plan is to document my daily progress with an online journal, and I will upload pictures and videos so that you can be a part of my journey. I'm super excited to see some of the most beautiful scenery up close and personal. I am looking forward to the physical part of the trip and taking time for personal introspection. And yes...I'm looking forward to conquering some fears as I travel the great unknown. Particularly bears. I'm looking forward to writing a book upon my return in the hopes that I will inspire others never to give up on their dream.

It occurred to me that I might be able to help others as I make this journey. I was thinking that it would be cool if my friends and fellow adventurers could donate to a cause that is really making a difference in the lives of young people. I've chosen Big Brothers Big Sisters. Why BBBS? Because roughly 90% of every dollar you give goes directly to making and supporting matches between Littles and Bigs. That means that your financial support supports the cost of the match, ongoing supervision and relationships support and cultural and social activities for the children. I was blessed to be raised in a two parent household, and my heart goes out to the many children that are not as fortunate. Please consider donating to BBBS. (See details on the DONATE tab)

While I'm mentioning donations, I need to bring up something that I'm a little uncomfortable talking about. As you can imagine, this trip will not be inexpensive. As I am finalizing my budget for supplies, camping, lodging, and food, I realize that this, too, can be an opportunity to bring friends together as an integral part of my journey. To contribute please click on the DONATE tab. ANY amount is welcomed and appreciated! THANK YOU.
